Beyond Green Eyes

The Day I Died, The Life I Began

Some lives change slowly.
Others split in an instant.

Beyond Green Eyes: The Day I Died, The Life I Began is a deeply personal memoir about what happens when everything you rely on—your body, your identity, your future—changes without warning.

Before the moment that altered everything, life was shaped by pressure, discipline, and quiet resilience. Then, in an instant, a catastrophic medical emergency turned an ordinary day into a fight for survival. There was no time to prepare—only seconds, instinct, and chance.

But survival is only the beginning.

What follows is not a simple recovery story, but an honest look at what comes after: navigating a life that feels unfamiliar, facing systems that manage rather than care, and confronting the loss of independence, identity, and dignity.

This book moves beyond clichés about resilience.
There are no easy lessons or polished inspiration—only a raw, unfiltered account of adapting to a reality you didn’t choose.

At its core, the book challenges the way we talk about strength. It asks difficult questions:

  • What does it mean to live when your life no longer resembles what it once was?

  • How do you hold onto dignity when the world quietly takes it from you?

  • And how do you move forward when “going back” is no longer an option?

This is not a story meant to inspire from a distance. It is meant to be felt up close.

About the author

Steven Vine is a survivor whose life changed in an instant after a sudden and devastating medical crisis left him blind. What followed was not a simple story of recovery, but a long, uncertain process of learning how to live again in a way he never expected.

His journey has been shaped as much by frustration and loss as it has by resilience. Rather than presenting a polished version of strength, Steven speaks openly about the realities most people don’t see—the emotional weight of dependence, the gaps within healthcare systems, and the ongoing process of adapting to a world that no longer feels familiar.

Today, Steven shares his experiences through his podcast, Disability Diaries, where he creates space for honest conversations around disability, identity, and navigating life after profound change. Through his speaking engagements, he connects with audiences in a way that is grounded, direct, and deeply human—focusing not on motivation, but on truth.
